Veterans pilot program to fill teaching vacancies clears committee

TRENTON – A bill to set up a pilot program to help veterans become teachers, A4377, was approved today by the Assembly Education Committee.

The bill passed 8-0.

This bill establishes the “VETeach Pilot Program” in the Department of Education. The purpose is to address the shortage of certified public school teachers that is anticipated to occur due to teacher retirements.

Under the pilot program, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will enroll, in a 36-month teacher preparation program, veterans who served in the armed forces on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

Sponsor Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, (D-27), South Orange, said the jobless rate in 2011 among veterans was about 11.5 percent, so the bill helps solve two problems: put veterans back to work and fill the growing numbers of teaching vacancies.
