TRENTON – U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone, (D-6), and Frank LoBiondo, (R-2), are submitting competing bills to circumvent the federal restrictions on sports betting and allowing New Jersey to enact its legal authorization of the wagering.
With the announcement of the two bills, Gov. Chris Christie was asked today which he supported. According to reports, LoBiondo’s bill would lift the federal ban, while Pallone’s bill would exempt New Jersey.
Christie said, “Whatever allows us to implement sports betting in New Jersey,” fulfilling the will of the voters who approved a referendum in November, “I’m in favor of.”
Pallone is holding a press conference at the Statehouse today to announce his bill with the state sponsor of the sports betting initiative, Sen. Ray Lesniak, (D-20), Elizabeth.
Asked which bill has a better chance of passing in Washington D.C., Christie said he doesn’t have the pulse of Capital Hill to make the call.
