Human trafficking bill signed

TRENTON – A bill to make sure that those under 18 years old arrested for prostitution are treated as victims rather than as criminals has been signed by the governor.

The legislation, S2599/A3700, mandates that the minors are treated as victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

“It is time that we stop treating the child victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking as criminals and instead offer them protective and rehabilitative services,” co-sponsor and Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), Montclair, said in a release. “By making available these much needed tools and services, such as counseling and crisis intervention, the state can provide these children with the support they vitally need to improve their lives.”
