Lappin Brags About Big Bank Boosting Borough Bid

East side Council Member Jessica Lappin emailed her supporters this morning thanking them for providing her with more than $600,000. And in the same email, Ms. Lappin seems to end speculation about which office she will seek next year.

Thank you!

I wanted to share some exciting news. Yesterday, we reported that our campaign has raised over $600,000 to date. This gives us the most cash on hand of any prospective candidate for borough-wide office in Manhattan.

I am thrilled that we have such broad support from so many New Yorkers at such an early stage.

While there is still much work to be done between now and election day 2013, I really wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks and let you know how much your continued support means to me. I greatly appreciate all of your help.

Talk to you soon,

Ms. Lappin had been thought to be considering either a borough president run or a public advocate run, and this email leaves little doubt which office she intends to seek.  From the looks of it, the race for Manhattan BP will be between Ms. Lappin, Community Board 1 chair Julie Menin and Council member Robert Jackson, although two Upper West Side electeds, Council member Gale Brewer and Assembly member Linda Rosenthal, are also said to be considering a race, and could upset the calculus considerably for the field.

With Ms. Lappin out of it, the race for the city’s second-highest ranking official seems wide open, with Councilmember Letitia James, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Reshma Saujani, a former Congressional candidate and an aide to Bill de Blasio, taking long looks at the race.

It is probably worth noting as well that Ms. Lappin’s $600,000 isn’t quite what it seems. She has raised a little over $400,000 this cycle–one -third of the remaining money in her bank account is carried over from her 2009 re-election race.
