Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr is best known as the director of two flat-out masterpieces: Satantango (1994) and Werckmeister Harmonies (2000). For him, The Man from London, which premiered in 2007, is a relatively minor effort—but it’s still a movie that other directors would kill to have on their résumés. Set in France, the murder mystery is composed of long, beautiful tracking shots. It’s slow, gorgeous going that gets off on the right foot with a single-take opening that brings Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil to mind. (Out this month on DVD.)
