Last September, VSL featured Nick Lowe’s excellent new album, The Old Magic. Last week, Lowe’s record label posted a video of the singer-songwriter jamming with Wilco and Mavis Staples—and it, too, is excellent.
Filmed backstage at Chicago’s Civic Opera House in December, the five-minute clip features a performance of the Band’s 1968 song “The Weight.” Lowe is in fine voice. Wilco is a more-than-competent backing band. And Staples—who’s been on the road for 62 years now—is a revelation.
