To Do Monday: Long Live King

Today, the nation pauses to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., martyred civil rights advocate and dauntless champion of nonviolent activism. Head to Boerum Hill, where BAM is holding its 26th annual Martin Luther King tribute. First, you’ll listen to Dennis M. Walcott, chancellor of the NYC Department of Education, celebrating Dr. King’s memory and his legacy of social justice, with accompanying musical performances by Toshi Reagon and the International Radio C.O.G.I.C Choir. Moved to tears by the blues and gospel tunes, you’ll dab your eyes before heading back to Manhattan to visit Riverside Church, where Dr. King gave his famed “Beyond Vietnam” speech. After a bi-borough day of tribute, you’ll retreat home exhausted but heartened.

Twenty-sixth Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 10:30 a.m. Free and open to the public; Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive.
