Tonight in DVR: Hey, Remember ‘Catfish’? Remember 2010?

'Catfish.'

'Catfish.'

We’re here to tell you just how to set your DVR before heading out for drinks or dinner–or just watching something better on TV!

Catfish is a weird little document: practically outdated when it was released in theaters (to huge hype and limited box office), it represents ruling-class anxieties about the never-ever-realized “inevitablities” of the social-media era. Is there anything true in this documentary about a young man who meets a child on Facebook, becomes obsessed with her family, becomes sexually obsessed with one particular member of her family, and finds that member is lying about her identity? Perhaps it’s merely a great document of quite how worried we all were about managing our online selves and navigating an Internet full of potential impostors, if a flawed document about how we found out the Internet actually worked. Maybe Catfish turned out to be weirdly out-of-time–or maybe it turned out to be prescient in a way we’ll only figure out once all of our identities are hyper-targeted not by a sociopathic liar but by a million ad agencies, in like two months!

DVR HBO Signature at 7:30pm to catch Catfish.
