We’re not weary of Steve Martin, as such–we’re always delighted on the biennial occasion when he pokes his head out to seek his own shadow, and we still think he’s the great Oscar host. (Take that, Billy Crystal!) But we’re perpetually girding our loins for disappointment, knowing that his next project will very likely be a banjo album or a children’s movie or a series of proclamations about art collecting. Why are we so disappointed? Well, it’s because The Jerk is so, so good. A shaggy-dog collection of nutty sight gags, this movie introduced a boundary-pushing stand-up comic to moviegoers–and it still feels fresh. You’d be forgiven for wondering what the promising young comedian at the center of the movie will do next–and for pretending the rest is still unwritten!
