Vice President Joe Biden headlined a fundraiser for U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) tonight at the Morris County home of attorney Phil Sellinger.
“Obama went to Washington, D.C., to do what is right regardless of re-election,” Biden told the group of Menendez supporters.
Guests included state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-18) and State Party Chairman John Wisniewski, generally regarded as two potential 2013 Democratic candidates for governor.
Whatever worries Democrats harbor about going up against incumbent Republican Gov. Chris Christie in 2013 weren’t evident tonight in the home of the highly regarded Sellinger.
Biden acknowledged what Democrats see as a cannibalizing Republican presidential primary field.
“Usually the Republicans hide the football but they’re giving it to us,” the vice president said to applause.
The laughs continued when Biden toyed with a party slogan for 2012: “Democrats: Killed bin Laden, Saved GM.”
Menendez talked about his Union City roots and family values.
“This country’s best days are ahead of us,” said the senator, who faces a challenge from veteran state Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-13).
