Sarlo laments lack of fiscal estimate in universities’ reorganization plan

NEWARK – Sen. Paul Sarlo, (D-36), Wood-Ridge, today echoed Mayor Cory Booker’s concerns about the lack of a fiscal estimate in the state’s reorganization plan involving Rutgers University, Rowan University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

“They put out a blueprint that no one has put a dollar sign on,” said Sarlo, chair of the Senate Budget Committee.  The Higher Education committees of both chambers held a joint hearing today into the planned restructuring of the state’s major higher education institutions.

He agreed with Booker that the plan would put University Hospital at “a level below the other two teaching hospitals.”

“It puts them in a very, very difficult situation,” he said. “Instead of being unified as one, we are going out as three separate systems.”
