Bob Turner has staked an early lead in the race for the GOP nomination for the US Senate.
According to a new Q-Poll, the Queens Congressman is favored by 19 percent of Republicans. Wendy Long, a Manhattan attorney, nets 11 percent of the vote and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos, who has been running for the seat for the past two years, gets 7 percent of the vote. Still, a majority of Republicans remain undecided, and all three trail Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand by over 30 points.
“If a happy campaign is one with a lot of opponents, even happier is one with a lot of anonymous opponents,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnpiac Polling Institute. “Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s three opponents, so far, fall short of even the generic GOP vote. But it’s seven long months until Election Day.”
The poll also contained good news for Sen. Gillibrand: she now has a 60 percent approval rating, her highest level ever.
