A source close to the 10th Congressional District campaign of Newark Council President Donald Payne Jr. told PolitickerNJ.com that Downtown Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop today will endorse Payne for Congress.

Jersey City claims 106 districts in the 10th District.

Fulop’s team won over 80 of those districts in school board elections two weeks ago.

Payne is running with establishment Democratic Party support in Essex County but lacks the formal backing of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) in his home county of Hudson.

The HCDO supports Payne’s rival in the 10th District race, state Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), Montclair.

Fulop, a 2013 mayoral candidate, opposes incumbent Mayor Jerry Healy.

A potential third candidate for mayor, state Sen. Sandra Cunningham, (D-31), Jersey City, backs Gill.

The source told PolitickerNJ.com that in exchange for the councilman’s backing now in the 10th District Primary, Payne intends to support Fulop for mayor in 2013.
