When pop star Nicki Minaj pulled out of performing at the May 7 gala at the last minute, YouTube phenomenon Azealia Banks (who is often, unhappily, compared to Ms. Minaj) was reportedly called in to replace her.

“I’ve Been invited to Perform for PRADA next week in NYC! Gonna b so lush !!” Ms. Banks tweeted. “Let’s see what new songs I debut there! #metball2012”

Although she has yet to put out an album, Ms. Banks is no stranger to the fashion industry; she has already performed at Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld’s home (video below). This month she told W that she loves “Christopher Kane and all his big shiny shit,” but, according to the deleted tweets, it’s hipster couturier Alexander Wang who has the honor of dressing the 20 year-old Harlem native.

Last year Florence + The Machine performed, and in 2010 Lady Gaga performed after a little coaxing from Oprah Winfrey and Terence Koh.

The so-called East Coast Oscars will be hosted by Miucci Prada (her work, along with that of the late Elsa Schiaparelli, is the subject of the Met’s Costume Institute exhibit), Carey Mulligan and Ms. Wintour. For the first time ever, the red carpet will be livestreamed, but we’ll still have to rely on spies with cell phone cameras for a glimpse of Ms. Banks’s performance.
