An artist record for Ghanaian-born El Anatsui was set at London auction house Bonhams yesterday. New World Map, a tapestry that is part of the same series Mr. Anatsui exhibited at the 2007 Venice Biennale, for £541,250 ($850,544). Two weeks ago, at another Bonhams auction, one of Mr. Anatsui’s tapestries came close to this price, selling for $772,500.
Mr. Anatsui was one of New York dealer Jack Shainman’s breakout artists. He is currently based out of Nigeria.
