GARFIELD – Gov. Chris Christie, touching on some of his major initiatives, called for lawmakers to enact tenure reform for educators, saying teachers and students deserve better.
“I don’t understand why anybody should be guaranteed a job after three years and one day in that job,” Christie said at a town hall in Garfield this morning.
“My argument is not with the teachers,” he said. “My argument is with the unions.”
Christie said he hopes to work with lawmakers this session to enact teacher reform in the state.
The governor also renewed calls for merit pay, saying while ineffective teachers should be dismissed, educators who excel at teaching students should be eligible for increased pay.
“Why shouldn’t we be able to release the ineffective teachers?” Christie asked, adding, “Why shouldn’t those excellent teachers be paid … based on their accomplishment?”
