“This is ridiculous stuff,’’ Gov. Chris Christie said of the expenditures disclosed in the report, which included items such as country club memberships and airline trips for spouses.

“I’m concerned,’’ he said, “when we’re fighting to make higher education more affordable,” when they are trying to justify to the public increased investment in the colleges’ infrastructure, that news of such wasteful spending will make their task more difficult.

He said he wants a thorough review by Higher Education Secretary Rochelle Hendricks into what is going on at the community colleges.  Christie also said it is possible this Comptroller’s report will lead to legislative reforms.

He also credited additional resources given to Comptroller Matthew Boxer’s office. “We knew he would turn out some really useful stuff,’’ Christie said.
