On Tuesday, a foundation set up by the artist Cy Twombly before his death in 2011 purchased a mansion on East 82nd Street for $27.5 million. It plans to turn the five-story building into “an education center and small museum to celebrate the artist’s work and burnish his reputation,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
Ralph Lerner, the secretary of the Cy Twombly Foundation, told The Journal that he hopes the new space will make Twombly more of a household name in America, placing him alongside his contemporaries Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.
