The complete press release regarding Mr. Fischer’s win follows below:
NEW YORK, May 10, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The FLAG Art Foundation today announced that New York-based artist Dan Fischer has been named the recipient of the FLAG Summer Hamptons Art Residency Program (SHARP) for 2012. This unique residency supports emerging artists by offering an idyllic space to work and live in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. The picturesque seaside towns and beautiful natural landscapes surrounding them have long provided a refuge from the bustle of New York City and have inspired several generations of iconic artists, from Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning to Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol to Chuck Close and Eric Fischl. The six-week residency will be in a private farmhouse in Sagaponack.
Last year’s SHARP recipient was Lesley Vance. Her work, which currently is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, will travel to FLAG and open on September 21, 2012.
Dan Fischer’s drawings are homages to artists and artworks that inspire him. Upon selecting an image, he overlays it with a 1/8 inch grid and draws one on a blank piece of paper the same size. Using a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser, he fastidiously replicates the image by concentrating on drawing one box at a time. Some of his subjects include renderings of Louise Bourgeois, a detail of Robert Gober’s Drain, and Gerhard Richter working in his studio. A devotional quality permeates and invites the viewer to experience his work. As Fischer states, “There’s something about worked graphite on paper that feels very personal and accessible. Some people have said that the surface of the drawings have a velvety quality, and that they’d like to touch them. The touch of graphite can be a very seductive thing.”
Stephanie Roach, FLAG’s Director, added, “Following Lesley Vance’s successful residency last summer, we are excited to select Dan as this year’s Resident. We’ve enjoyed exhibiting Dan’s work at FLAG before, and it will be interesting to see how his work is influenced by the setting.”
Fischer is represented by Derek Eller Gallery in New York and Alison Jacques Gallery in London. His work was recently included in the exhibition Grey Full, a show curated by Geoffrey Young, at the Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York, is currently in the exhibition Lifelike at the Walker Arts Center, and will be in an exhibition titled Graphite at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, curated by Sarah Urist Green, which will open December 2012.
