Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization’s political action committee endorsed Rep. Steve Rothman in New Jersey’s newly configured 9th Congressional District.
“I’m very proud and grateful to receive this extremely important endorsement,” Rothman said. “I will continue to fight to protect a woman’s reproductive rights and freedoms. I have fought my entire career to protect Roe v. Wade, and I am honored to be recognized for continuing to fight that fight.”
Keenan said voters in New Jersey’s 9th District could count on Rothman to be a consistent champion of the values of freedom and privacy.
Rothman has a perfect pro-choice record, while his primary opponent, Rep. Bill Pascrell, has cast 21 anti-choice votes during his time in Congress, Keenan said.
The primary race in New Jersey comes as anti-choice leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives continue to attack choice. In 2011, the House held eight votes on choice-related issues, the highest number in more than a decade. And, thus far in 2012, anti-choice House leaders have queued up five separate bills with anti-abortion provisions for votes this session.
“The U.S. House of Representatives has declared a War on Women, and we need our strongest team out front taking on these attacks on women’s freedom and privacy,” Keenan said. “Without question, Rep. Rothman is the consistent champion on whom women in the 9th District can depend to stand strong, especially on tough votes. We are proud to support his candidacy and will make sure our members know that Rep. Rothman is the fully pro-choice candidate in this race.”
Keenan said Rep. Rothman’s opponent’s mixed-choice record included multiple votes to ban a safe, medically appropriate abortion method without an adequate exception to protect a woman’s health.
