Wendy Long Campaign Shakeup

There has been a shake-up in the Wendy Long’s campaign for U.S. Senate as campaign manager Dick Wadhams has stepped down.

Mr. Wadhams is highly regarded in Republican political circles, helping to guide John Thune to his upset victory over Tom Daschle in 2004. He is a close friend of Karl Rove’s and was regarded by some as an heir apparent to Mr. Rove.

The shakeup comes as voters prepare to go to the polls in just four weeks from today. Ms. Long has struggled to raise money and to keep her expenses low, which could explain the reasons for Mr. Wadhams’ departure.

Ms. Long, a Manhattan attorney, has already received the endorsement of the Conservative Party. She faces Congressman Bob Turner and Nassau County comptroller George Maragos in the GOP primary for the right to face off against incumbent Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.

In addition to his relationship with Mr. Rove and Mr. Thune, Mr. Wadhams has also worked on the Senate campaign of George Allen and served for many years as the head of the Colorado Republican Party.

We will update this story as more information comes in.
