Local Republican lawmakers Peter King and Michael Grimm received some criticism from an unlikely corner this morning when the Club for Growth released a new scorecard that showed them to be among a group of Republicans who voted the least often to cut spending.
“The Club continues to be disappointed, in particular, by the big spenders in the Republican Party,” said Club for Growth president Chris Chocola. “With a $16 trillion debt, voting to keep discretionary spending in appropriations bills is simply kicking hard choices into the future and passing the buck to future generations. House Leadership is clearly not pushing its conference to vote for spending cuts offered on the floor.”
According to the group’s analysis, both Congressman King and Congressman Grimm voted to cut spending only 4 percent of the time; the average Republican voted for spending cuts 59 percent of the time.
Oddly, the scorecard had high praise for Brooklyn Rep. Nydia Velazquez, one of the most liberal members of the House. According to the Club for Growth’s analysis, Ms. Velazquez voted to cut spending 17 percent of the time, sixth most among Democrats.
