TRENTON – A coalition of environmental groups and other organizations are delivering about 7,000 petitions and signatures to lawmakers today in a show of support for legislation that would prohibit the treatment, discharge or storage of hydraulic fracturing materials in the state.
The coalition, consisting of more than 70 organizations, delivered the petitions to Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) and Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-34).
They are advocating in support of A575 and S253, which would ban hydraulic fracturing byproducts from being sent to New Jersey. They say the waste contains radioactive material and other carcinogens released from deep underground as a result of the process commonly referred to as “fracking.”
Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-38) and Sen. Robert Gordon (D-38) are sponsoring the legislation.
During a news conference announcing the legislation last month, Wager told supporters, “We must not allow New Jersey to be a dumping ground.”
