While New Yorkers eagerly await the unveiling of MoMA PS1’s annual Young Architects Program installation—a blue starburst called “Wendy,” designed by HWKN—the YAP program announced that it is expanding far beyond New York’s borders, to Istanbul.
YAP, which taps emerging architects to create a temporary structure each year at the Long Island City kunsthalle, is now set to collaborate with the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art to launch a similar program, which will realize “temporary exterior installations to serve as biennial architectural landscapes for summer programming” there, according to a news release.
The move into Istanbul is the latest international expansion for YAP, which has also joined with the Constructo organization in Santiago, Chile, and the Maxxi museum in Rome on such projects.
The Istanbul edition of YAP will display its first winning entry in June 2013, at the same time that its counterparts in Chile, Rome and Long Island City do so.
“The expansion of YAP to Rome, Santiago, and now Istanbul, gives well-deserved international recognition to a pool of talented locally-based designers within these programs, fostering innovative ideas and helping launch careers,” MoMA Chief Curator of Architecture and Design Barry Bergdoll said in a statement.
