Drug court bill to be signed into law

TRENTON – Gov. Chris Christie’s office said he will sign the drug court program bill Thursday.

His office said Christie will return to the Rescue Mission in Trenton, where he proposed expansion of drug court earlier this year, and sign S881.

The bill Christie will sign is a bipartisan effort that addresses the issues Christie cited earlier this year, that warehousing otherwise non-violent drug offenders is not working.

The bill that was passed by overwhelming majorities in both houses went through many changes: a section regarding prosecutorial objection was removed, for example, and it takes more of a phased-in approach than originally envisioned.
