A few weeks back, The Politicker posted a press release from a Satmar faction in Williamsburg in which they claimed the results of the race between Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and her challenger, Councilman Erik Dilan, in the June 26th Democratic primary showed their influence was growing. Mr. Dilan, although unsuccessful, was supported by Brooklyn Democratic boss Vito Lopez, a close ally of the larger of the two Hasidic groups in Williamsburg, both of which have functioned as impressively solid voting blocs for and against whichever candidate was supported by Mr. Lopez in recent years. However, the smaller faction, the Aroynem, felt they had overperformed and enlisted the help of George Arzt Communications to argue their point.
The larger faction, the Zaloynim, decided not to take that sitting down, however, and apparently hired Sheinkopf LTD to send out their own press release today contesting the Aroynem analysis.
“The facts speak for themselves,” Zaloynim Rabbi Abe Deutsch said in the statement. “Those that would seek to say that our vote has been weakened are dealing in myths, and illusions. The numbers being thrown about are distorted for personal and political gain with no basis in fact. It’s easy for the dissidents to concoct pie in the sky fantasies before the final numbers are in, now it’s time for them to come back to earth and face the reality of the numbers.”
They also provided a very detailed breakdown to further illustrate the point, which you can view below along with the full release. And so the dispute wages on:

Williamsburg Community Turns Out in Record Numbers to Support Candidate Erik Dilan, Analysis Shows
Factual BOE numbers destroy the myth….. Turnout Doubled and Approximately 2/3 of “Hasidic Williamsburg” voted for Erik Dilan.
Satmar (followers of Rabbi Zalmen Teitelbaum) maintained their edge over rivals in line with previous elections.
New York, NY – The Hasidic Williamsburg leadership led by Rabbi David Niederman and associated with the Satmar Grand Rabbi Zalmen Teitelbaum and the Hasidic communities of Pupa, Vein, Klausenberg, Skver, Visnitz, Skulen and others today released a report showing that Hasidic communities in Williamsburg overwhelmingly supported Erik Dilan in the race to replace Rep. Nydia Velasquez in June’s Democratic primary. Although Mr. Dilan ultimately was unsuccessful in his attempts to unseat the incumbent, the analysis demonstrates that Hasidic community maintained its long-standing united voice, voted as a bloc and remains one of the strongest political forces in the state.
“The final numbers confirm that our united voice was amplified, our voter turnout almost doubled and once again we have proven our ability to turn out the vote for candidates who support our agenda and address our needs.” said Rabbi Abe Deutsch a follower of Rabbi Zalmen. “The results prove us to be an vital part of the city’s political fabric and an important constituency for those that want to represent us.”
The umbrella group representing the major congregations in Hasidic Williamsburg, the largest of which is the Satmar community, endorsed Dilan and brought out record numbers to support him. The voting analysis shows that 50th Assembly District came out in force and delivered 1/5 of the total votes in the race, despite only making up 1/10 of the district. Dilan received 2/3 of his entire vote from that AD, where he beat Velazquez 61.45% to 37.37%, the analysis shows.
The analysis (attached) provides detailed maps that show voting results broken up by election district, supporting the conclusion that Dilan handily won in largely Hasidic portions of Williamsburg. There is also a spreadsheet comparing past elections and the high turnout this June.
