Weekly Advance: Week of July 16

TRENTON – It’s expected Gov. Chris Christie will come out swinging Monday in his summer-long battle to paint New Jersey Democrats as tax relief withholders.

The New Jersey Statehouse is expected to remain quiet next week, with the Legislature’s only committee hearing – as of Friday – slated for Thursday at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Despite the lull, Christie is expected to make an appearance Monday in between vacation and stops along his national tour.

And if in front of the cameras Monday, the governor can be expected to deliver remarks on how the state’s Democratic Party has returned to the era of the “Corzine Democrat.”

Drug court

Gov. Chris Christie is also expected to sign off on mandatory drug court program legislation that recently passed both chambers of the Legislature by nearly unanimous votes, sources said.

The governor made the call in March for a statewide mandatory drug court program for nonviolent drug offenders to enter treatment.

The Democrat-controlled Legislature sent a bill to Christie’s desk that would create a pilot program for a mandatory drug court treatment. The legislation would create a two-year pilot program to be operated in two areas of the state.

The program would be evaluated following the trial period, at which time it would be determined whether to make the drug court program mandatory statewide.

Christie, who has criticized the pilot program approach, was overruled by Democrats, who argued the mandatory aspect of the program – including the overall cost – needed further study.
