Newark Mayor Cory Booker spoke before a packed house of Mercer County Democrats at John Henry’s in Hamilton Township.
Booker gave his usual stump speech, telling tales of his days playing football at Stanford. Booker made no mention of a potential gubernatorial run during the gathering.
A source in the room said the mayor had the rapt attention of the few hundred attendees, who paid between $60 and $125 to attend.
Booker told the crowd he has a full slate of campaign-related events on behalf of President Obama, including swings to Texas and Florida. Booker was rumored to be out of favor with Team Obama after a disastrous national television appearance last summer iin which he described himself as nauseated by the tone of the presidential campaign and specifically attacks on GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s time at Bain Capital.
U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) also hit the Hamilton event, but did not speak. Both men are among a list of potential contenders in next year’s gubernatorial sweepstakes. Not to be outdone with the Mercer County faithful, state Sen. Barbara Buono, who is also on the same list, is scheduled to appear tonight at the East Windsor Democratic club.
