Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is really making it rain Venice Biennale artists. The installation artist Sarah Sze, whom they represent, is presenting work in the United States pavilion, and now the gallery has announced that the very wonderful sculptor Mark Manders will stage an exhibition in the Dutch pavilion at the biannual showcase, which runs June 1 through Nov. 24. Lorenzo Benedetti will handle curatorial duties.
Mr. Manders, who was born in 1968, makes work that frequently combines elements of design, architecture and figurative sculpture. For more than 20 years he’s been at work on a heady project called Self-Portrait as a Building that has included an alter ego, plans and models for fictional buildings and some of contemporary art’s most bewildering, uncanny sculptures. The Netherlands has sent an impressive cast of artists to the Biennale over the years. Its entrants over the years have included Aeronaut Mik (2007), Daan van Golden (1999), Stanley Brouwn (1982), Jan Dibbets (1972) and Constant (1966).
