If you can believe it, ARTnews turned 110 this year, having continuously published since 1902. To mark the occasion, next month’s anniversary issue will revisit their “Paints a Picture” series from the 1950s, which–not to sound too hyperbolic or anything–includes some of the great pieces of art journalism ever. The publication will be looking back at their visits with Hans Hoffman, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell and Jackson Pollock. You can read Robert Goodnough’s classic “Jackson Pollock Paints a Picture” here.

ARTnews will be updating the series by focusing it on four contemporary artists for the new issue: Pat Steir, Diana Al-Hadid, Hank Willis Thomas and Sanford Biggers.

Milton Esterow, ARTnews‘ editor and publisher for the last 40 years (!), had this to say in a statement: “The history of ARTnews documents the changes in the art world over the last 11 decades and the changing perception of art, which the magazine has mirrored and helped mold.”
