Stumping in Perth Amboy for U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Il.) regaled an ironworkers hall crowd with a story about Menendez calling him to ask Gutierrez for support to lead the Latino Congressional caucus.
Gutierrez was in Chicago at the time and didn’t want to go to Washington, D.C.
“I need you there tomorrow,” Menendez urged, according to Gutierrez.
“I don’t want to go to D.C. You’re ahead by 50 votes,” the Illinoisan protested but he went finally on the repeated prodding of his fellow Latino congressman.
“He won by one vote,” the Puerto Rican-descended congressman told the crowd. “I came to tell you, live with no regrets. You vote and get everyone out to vote.”
