The Wall Street Journal today takes a look at how museums stop vandalism, in light of the man who defaced a Mark Rothko this week at the Tate Modern.
There’s very little to be done, actually, besides putting it behind protective glass, which curators don’t like, and installing cameras, which only help punish people after the fact. The Mona Lisa has Plexiglas around it, and the Museum of Modern Art is on high alert for when Edvard Munch’s The Scream comes to the museum later this month, though they won’t say what their plans for protecting it are.
