As Democrats try to figure out who will challenge Gov. Chris Christie, former Governor James Florio said he believes Newark Mayor Cory Booker would clear the field.
“He has sufficient name ID, gravitas and ability,” said Florio. “The governor is at a high point, but Booker would make it a race.”
Sources say Booker is mulling a 2013 run at Christie. Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) could run if Booker doesn’t, sources say.
Florio said Booker has talked to him about a candidacy, but said he did not wish to share the substance of their discussions.
“I’ve had some conversations with him,” said the former Democratic governor. “I think he’s seriously considering it.”
