Only once in history has a ticket lost the home states of both the presidential and vice presidential candidates and still been victorious.
That year was 1916 and the candidate was none other than New Jersey’s former Gov. Woodrow Wilson, Woodrow was joined on the ticket by former Indiana Gov. Thomas Marshall. That ticket lost both states and still went on to victory.
The last time both members of the ticket lost their home state was 1972, when Democrat George McGovern lost his home state of South Dakota and Vice Presidential nominee Sargent Shriver lost Maryland.
Overall, both members of a ticket have lost their home states 17 times since 1824.
