This year in London, Frieze Masters made a splash as a non-contemporary alternative to the Frieze Art Fair. Now, the one-year-old Frieze New York has a similar counterpart for its second edition this coming May.

The Salon: MasterWorks, presented by Park Avenue Armory veteran Sanford Smith, will be held during Frieze New York at the Park Avenue Armory, May 9 through May 13. It will specialize in Renaissance through 20th-century works.

Following the resounding success of his most recent venture, The Salon: Art + Design, Sanford Smith has announced his newest fair to take place in the Park Avenue Armory, The Salon: MasterWorks, Fine art from the Renaissance through the 20th century. This fine art only show will be held concurrently with the New York edition of Frieze, from May 9-13. The Salon will be the only New York show featuring such a vast range of periods and genres.

The Salon: MasterWorks seeks to further the Salon brand by bringing the best dealers from the United States, Europe and Asia to New York. The Salon: Art + Design featured top international dealers in fine art and modern and historical design. The event was an unparalleled success both critically and commercially, which The New York Times called “A Museum in the Making at the Park Avenue Armory” The Salon: MasterWorks aspires to the same level of taste, quality and connoisseurship among its exhibitors.

Smith, a show producer and manager, has been creating important art and design events for over 30 years. His Fall Antiques Show at the Pier was the first to feature American only art and design. With the inception of Modernism–A century of Style and Design, he is widely credited with creating a collecting genre. His Outsider Art Fair called attention to the incredible works of art created by outliers. Works on Paper was the first fine art show to exclude paint on canvas and concentrate on drawings, watercolors, prints and photography.

Of The Salon: MasterWorks, Smith says, “we look forward to welcoming exceptional dealers in Old Masters through the 20th century emulating the high quality of the Salon: Art + Design. The timing of the show–coinciding with the auctions and Frieze is sure to bring the worlds’ top collectors to the Armory.”
