‘Boardwalk Empire’ judge renominated

Superior Court Judge Nelson C. Johnson, author of ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ which became the basis for the HBO series, was renominated yesterday to his spot on the court.

Johnson began writing the book, formally titled ‘Boardwalk Empire:  The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City,’ while a planning board attorney for the city Enuch “Nucky” Johnson once controlled.  According to an interview with the Press of Atlantic City, Nelson Johnson – no relation to “Nucky”  – mulled over the book for three years before beginning to write. The book was pubslihed 20 years later – in 2002 – and became the basis for the hit series that debuted in 2010.

In addition to judge and attorney, from 1975 to 1980, Johnson served on the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders. It was there he met former state Sen. Bill Gormley, who in 2005 nominated Johnson for a judgeship. ‘Boardwalk Empire’ judge renominated
