Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick has removed besieged Assemblyman Bob Schroeder from his post as Deputy Republican Whip, Bramnick said today.
Schroeder was indicted last year on charges that he defrauded investors out of nearly $2 million and wrote millions in bad checks.
Bramnick also has reached out to Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver to request that Schroeder be removed from all committee assignments.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate that he serve on committees,” Bramnick said Thursday. “I have empathy and sympathy for people. But this is not about Bob Schroeder, it’s about the people he represents. I don’t think he can function effectively with the indictment out there.”
Bramnick already has called on Schroeder to step down, but to date, the Bergen County assemblyman has announced no plans to do so.
Schroeder sits on the Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee and the Assembly Labor Committee.
In a statement, Oliver said she had no problem granting Bramnick’s request and would file the appropriate paperwork as soon as possible.
