Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono today announced that her campaign has exceeded its fundraising goals for the shortened quarter, approaching nearly a quarter of a million dollars, most of which was raised in the last ten days, and released the following statement detailing next steps for the campaign….
“Over the past few weeks, my campaign for governor has seen an influx of support from all quarters, and our momentum grows by leaps and bounds daily,” said Buono. “I have personally had the opportunity to begin traveling the state to discuss the issues of importance to middle class taxpayers throughout New Jersey and, not surprisingly, the one common refrain that I hear over and over is that we need to create jobs and get people back to work. Governor Christie’s decision to fight for the super-rich in this state at the expense of our middle class has left us with nearly one in ten people unemployed and an unemployment average almost two full points higher than the national average. That is simply unacceptable.
“When I first decided to run for governor I knew the implications of the struggle. I knew I would come under attack by Governor Christie and I knew it would be no easy road to the Democratic nomination. But I also spoke to my friends and neighbors and people throughout my district and then I looked to my family and immediately realized that this fight is too important. The fight to afford others the opportunity to live, work and raise a family in this state, the same way I did, is too important.
“That decision has been validated each and every day in the endorsements I have already received and the support and encouragement bestowed on me every day by the teachers, police, firefighters, activists, mayors, and folks from all walks of life throughout this state I have had already the good fortune to speak with.
“Today we are announcing that we have already raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars, mostly in the last ten days, and over the next few weeks we anticipate qualifying for matching funds. We will continue building momentum with a broad coalition across the state of people who have simply had enough of Governor Christie’s oppressive fiscal policies while we work to raise the money necessary to effectively communicate our message and do what it takes to bring the fight to the governor. New Jersey’s middle class taxpayers deserve nothing less.”
