TRENTON – The Democrats’ lone declared gubernatorial challenger is calling for a special legislative session to deal with gun violence.
State Sen. Barbara Buono, so far the Democrats’ only challenger to Gov. Chris Christie, called on Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver Thursday to call a special session to pass new measures on gun violence, Buono’s campaign announced.
“If Governor Christie refuses to pass meaningful gun safety measures, then New Jersey’s Legislature must act,” Buono said in a statement.
“President Obama and Governor Cuomo have already proposed comprehensive gun safety legislation that will make our streets and our families safer,” she said.
“If Governor Christie insists on catering to right-wing groups who oppose any common-sense gun safety laws, we must hold him accountable. We must do everything we can to stop gun violence, and the time to act is now.”
