Cigarette smuggling fines bill released

TRENTON – The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee released bill S2516, which increases civil and criminal penalties involving unstamped and counterfeit cigarettes and cigarette smuggling.

It was released unanimously.

This bill increases civil and criminal penalties involving unstamped and counterfeit cigarettes and cigarette smuggling and establishes a third degree crime of importing, selling or distributing, transporting or possessing with intent to sell, counterfeit cigarettes.

The bill increases certain fines, county jail maximum sentences and the grading of certain criminal offenses that can currently be imposed under the Cigarette Tax Act for illegal cigarette smuggling and various schemes to evade the cigarette tax.

The bill was amended, namely in that the $500 fines were increased to $1,000.
