TRENTON – Assembly lawmakers approved a resolution Thursday expressing the Legislature’s objection to certain recommendations included in Gov. Chris Christie’s Educational Adequacy Report.
The Assembly approved ACR172/SCR134 following a 46-30 vote.
Democratic lawmakers fear the report would lead to reduced funding for at-risk students by changing the added “weight” given to poorer districts when funding formulas are created.
Republican lawmakers opposed the resolution, saying the state needs to adopt a “more equitable and effective” school funding formula, said Assemblyman Jay Webber, (R-26).
“Among other reasons, the school-funding formula that we have is so broke,” he said. “We need to not only adopt these recommendations, … but change the school funding formula.”
Webber was the only lawmaker to speak on the resolution.
