The staff at PolitickerNJ.com would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jersey City Deputy Mayor Raj Mukherji and his fiancée – Natasha Alagarasan, an Associate Producer at NY1 News – on the loss of his father, Asim Mukherji, 71, of Lakewood, NJ. Mr. Mukherji died today in his native Calcutta, India following a brainstem stroke.
A memorial service will be held in Jersey City following the family’s return from India, with details to be announced.
Mr. Mukherji was an alumnus of St. John’s University (MBA, Beta Gamma Sigma), Calcutta University, and Suri Vidyasagar College. He was a retired Certified Public Accountant, having worked as a healthcare auditor, and Comptroller throughout his career. Mr. Mukherji was a Rotarian, and he also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board for Compassionate Care
Centers of America Foundation in Woodbridge, one of six nonprofits selected by the NJ Department of Health to cultivate and dispense medicinal marijuana. He also moonlighted as a musician specializing in songs penned by Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and was a fan of the Beatles, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, and spaghetti western movies.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Anju; his three sons, Badsah “Buddy,” Sahan, and Raj; his daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law-to-be, Shona and Natasha; and his beloved granddaughters, Aishee and Anwesha.
