Health Exchange task force resolution passed along party lines

TRENTON – The Senate Commerce Committee released a resolution creating the “Joint Legislative Task Force on Health Insurance Exchange Implementation.”

The measure, SCR-144,  passed along party lines, with Democrats voting yes, and the committee’s two Republicans, Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean (R-21) Westfield and Gerald Cardinale (D-39) of Demarest, voting no.

“It is vital we be involved in the process to meet the unique interests of our residents,” said committee Chairwoman Nia Gill (D-34) of Montclair.

Kean opposed the measure because the task force would not have anyone from the Executive Branch.

Cardinale said he doubts the task force would have much sway, given that the federal government will be running the exchange, after Christie decided he didn’t want the state involved in implementing the exchange

“It seems we’re spinning our wheels,” he said. “It has no power to do anything.”

The resolution was passed.
