Headline of the Day: “Cuomo aides monitor press calls.”

Carlos Menchaca, a former staffer for Christine Quinn and Marty Markowitz, is up and running with his City Council bid. Although neither his website or stump speech name his opponent, Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez, he does say he “was really disappointed in Red Hook when I saw government not show up,” in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Mr. Menchaca’s campaign website also features a photo of Rep. Nydia Velázquez, whose challenger was backed by Ms. Gonzalez last year.

In a candidacy already endorsed by Ms. Velázquez, Antonio Reynoso officially launched his campaign to replace outgoing Councilwoman Diana Reyna. “Reynoso Gains Momentum and Traction as Frontrunner,” the press release announcing the event declared, making sure to note Mr. Reynoso’s status as a “Vito Foe,” should controversial Assemblyman Vito Lopez launch is own bid for the seat.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind began his radio show Saturday night by thanking his supporters, name-checking black officials like Eric Adams, Kevin Parker, Bill Thompson and David Paterson in particular. “We love Purim in our house. From early morning to 12 o’clock at night, people coming and going by the hundreds and it was very eventful. I think I will remember this Purim more than I’ll remember a lot of other Purims,” Mr. Hikind said. “It was a fascinating week to say the least.”

The Independence Party is often accused of supporting its donors’ goals rather than any kind of coherent ideology, and today, the Daily News is reporting that one of its biggest contributors were the Senate Republicans, whose competitive candidates all received the Independent line. Or, as Gatemouth explained it, “The fact that the Independence Party doesn’t stand for anything doesn’t mean that it doesn’t stand for anyone.”

And here’s President Barack Obama explaining the sequester on Saturday Night Live:
