Reports: Former Hamilton official gets 18 months behind bars

TRENTON – A former Hamilton official tied to the bribery scheme that landed the township’s mayor behind bars was sentenced today to 18 months in jail.

Rob Warney, Hamilton’s former director of planning, was sentenced in federal court about a week after a judge ordered disgraced Mayor John Bencivengo to serve time behind bars, according to reports. Warney pleaded guilty to money laundering for helping the Republican mayor disguise bribes.

In addition to serving 18 months in prison, Warney must also serve two years of supervisory release.

In November, Warney told jurors at Bencivengo’s trial that mounting financial woes and fears of being embarrassed during an election year drove the former mayor to accept thousands of dollars in bribes.

Last week, Bencivengo was sentenced to serve 38 months in jail for accepting $12,400 in bribes.
