Weekly Advance: Week of March 25

TRENTON – Speak of the calm before the storm.

The last full week of March is set to be anything except a busy five days under the Golden Dome. Lawmakers and department heads appear poised to take a breather before the real budget work begins, as there were no committee hearings on the agenda as of Friday afternoon.

But enjoy the calm while it’s there.

April will kick off with the state Treasurer and the Office of Legislative Service’s finance director testifying on the Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The annual event will be followed by a flurry of hearings by department heads over the course of the next few weeks.

Election cycle

However, it’s not all slow news.

New Jersey political wonks can anticipate a flurry of action outside of the Statehouse walls in the form of campaigns, namely the gubernatorial race.

State Sen. Barbara Buono caused a stir last week when she pounced on Gov. Chris Christie for his wavering stance on so-called gay conversion therapy.

The presumed Democratic challenger to the Republican incumbent displayed another example of kicking her campaign into full gear when Christie’s front office originally shook off the telephone news conference as campaign politics, but then later issued a statement clarifying that the governor is opposed to the controversial practice opponents argue is child abuse.

The governor will have public appearances this week and it’s unlikely Buono will remain silent.

If a political volley is to be had this week, it will be on the gubernatorial campaign trail.
