Chair Wars

Essex County Democratic sources threw out the names of Essex County Democratic Chairman Phil Thigpen and state Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29) as potential state party chairs.

Allies of state Sen. Barbara Buono’s (D-18) maintain that party protocol gives the winner of the Democratic Party gubernatorial primary the courtesy of her own choice.

Sources say Buono would prefer Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell (D-31), which establishment players around Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) and Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo say would be a non-starter with the south and north-based power players.

“I have an idea,” a Democrat told PolitickerNJ.com. “The party should make (Passaic County Democratic Chairman) John Currie the state party chairman. It’s a six-month term. It’s a matter of respect. It’s showing respect to the dean of the chairs. He likes Buono. People like and respect Currie. He could get people in line. He’d be a great choice favorable to all sides.”
