Mr. McDonald was the chief of staff of state Sen. Gerald Cardinale (R-39).

He attended Villanova and the NYU Wagner School of Business. He served in the U.S. Marines and was a member of the American Legion.

After selling his private business 15 years ago, Mr. McDonald became a legislative aid to N.J. Sen. Gerald Cardinale. He was also an avid pilot of small planes.

Mr. McDonald and Cardinale became friends in the 1970’s when the senator ran for mayor of Demarest.  An active member of the Norwood Republican Club, Mr. McDonald worked side-by-side with his wife, Maria, on campaigns and fundraisers for Cardinale as well as for  local candidates.

He will be warmly remembered by Cardinale and his staff for always starting the daily work day with a joke or family story.

He and his wife, Maria, met in high school and were married for 50 years. He has a son, John, and a brother and sister.

Arrangements will be at Barrett Funeral Home, 148 Dean Drive, Tenafly.  Visitation: Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  Interment: Wednesday from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Tenafly at 10 a.m.
