ELIZABETH – Denied the support of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) two years ago, state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20) said he anticipates the organization’s backing this year.
“Take a look at my ELEC report, they’ve already contributed to my campaign,” said the veteran senator. “There has been dialogue since the last time. They know I support quality public education.”
He also supports the Opportunity Scholarship Act, a pilot program for school vouchers, which ran him afoul of the organization in 2011.
The NJEA backed Assistant Superintendent of Elizabeth Schools Jerome Dunn.
In anticipation of another salvo, this time led by Senate challenger Donna Obe, Lesniak this year plans to engage Garden State Equality support in addition to his local political apparatus.
“They’ll have a lot of volunteers in here, providing boots on the ground,” the senator said.
