U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) this morning urged fellow Democrats to rally around Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono (D-18), according to a source on the call.
“The assignment to you, as chairs right now, is to get Democrats over the next few months back into the fold for Barbara,” Pallone told county party chairs on a conference call.
An early backer of Buono’s, the veteran congressman said the polling will tighten and when it does, the Democratic candidate will get a big boost.
Polls now show Gov. Chris Christie leading Buono by over 30 points.
“The public is just not happy – not happy with incumbents,” Pallone said. “This electorate is very volatile right now. The only advantage Chris Christie has is he can dole out things to different groups. But he has no advantage as an incumbent from a message point of view. The better that Barbara Buono does the better it will be for all our Democratic candidates.”
The congressman also argued that the campaign must highlight what Pallone cited as the Republican governor’s neglect of the state’s urban areas.
